BBC Writer’s Room – Jo Combes

From BBC Writer’s Room, Jo Combes delivers her top 10:

1. Write characters that you really really care about. If you don’t we won’t.
2. Go to see plays, listen to the radio and watch TV and Films- devour them. Find out what’s out there.
3. Be protective of your script- don’t put it out there until it’s ready.

4. Give your characters lines that actors would want to say.

5. Create characters that actors would want to play.

6. Don’t be snobby about popular drama- millions watch them for a reason!

7. Don’t get discouraged by the success of other writers- just use it to spur you on.

8. Write about what matters, not what you think will get commissioned.

9. Do your research- know the world you’re writing about in some way so it feels authentic.
